Super Bowl LIX is set to take place sunday, in New Orleans, where the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII.
“This wasn’t my super bowl game pick but I’m okay with it being a rematch, I like the rematch,” senior Darius Whiters said. “It’s the two best teams in the NFL and I believe this is what the fans wanted.”
The last time the Chiefs and Eagles played against each other in the Super Bowl, Kansas City brought home the championship, winning 38-35. Since then, the Eagles have added recent All-Pro running back Saquon Barkley to their roster.
“Saquon Barkley is probably going to get a lot of yards, maybe 100 to 150 yards,” junior Jesus Prieto said. “If the Eagles win, I think Sauqan Barkley will get super bowl MVP.”
Both the Eagles and Chiefs were the top two seeded teams in their respective conferences this season, fans such as senior Dwayne Thompson expect a close game from the powerhouses.
“I can see the Eagles starting off the game real fast early,” Thompson said. “Mid game the Chiefs come back around, and by the fourth quarter I can see it [coming down to] who wants it more.”
With such expectations for a close game, watchers expect there to be many contributing factors to who eventually wins.
“If the Eagles win it’s because the Eagles are going to run [Saquon] to death,” Whiters said. “If Patrick Mahomes can [find] Travis Kelce, then the Chiefs can definitely win.”
Going into this game, the Chiefs look to become the first to accomplish winning three Super Bowl’s in a row, also known as the three-peat. However, junior Cadarius Whitley hopes for a different outcome.
“I want the Eagles to win because I don’t like Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are trash,” Whitley said. “You know people might think differently but I want to see Barkley get a ring.”
As the Super Bowl continues to get closer, fans anticipate this matchup will shift the landscape of the NFL for the future.
“I think legacy wise it benefits the Chiefs the most. Mahomes will get another ring and the entire Chiefs organization will get a three-peat,” Whiters said. “But if the Eagles win, they’ll go in next year as a young team on fire.”
