The varsity football team faced Alief Taylor and Humble, where the Golden Eagles defeated the Alief Taylor Lions 27-16 while falling short to the Humble Wildcats 22-7.
“I was definitely not satisfied. I wish we would have won both games,” senior linebacker Trenton Burkhalter said. “But to go into district with one win, that’s pretty good and we’re planning to build off of that.”
Prior to each game, the football team worked hard to prepare for each opponent they faced.
“We watched our opponents on film and went over who their key players were,” junior wide receiver Kayson Traylor said. “[We] prepare based on that and determine who we’re going to attack and what plays to run.”
Though these preparations have led to the Golden Eagles winning a game, they faced difficulties throughout both games.
“I think our biggest challenge as a team is trying to be more uplifting as a team,” junior defensive tackle Javier Silguero said. “ We need to uplift each other more and stay positive throughout instead of always putting each other down.”
The team still had many standout moments to look back on such as a sideline touchdown from Colin Chandler against Humble.
“It beat the cornerback’s zone. They didn’t look to go down the sideline and by the time they saw it, it was too late,” Traylor said. “The play was well drawn up and it worked.”
Players felt these sets of games helped them learn what they can improve moving forward.
“I hope we improve by getting a win, that would be pretty nice,” Burkhalter said. “But we need to start off fast and finish. We definitely need to play harder, make sure we put points on the board.”
Now that the Golden Eagles have had time to reflect on their previous games, they aim to pick up their second win in the district opener against Magnolia at home on Sept. 14.
